Scope note
Hard, fine-grained wood of the species Swietenia mahagoni, native to southern Florida, the Bahamas, Cuba, Jamaica, and Hispaniola. It turns reddish brown at maturity and takes a good polish. This is the species for which the term "mahogany" was first coined, derived from a Native American term. The wood is used for cabinet-making and other purposes.
